"Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy
forget in time that men have died to win them."

I am in Washington DC. I am working a bit and seeing clients, friends, the sights and most importantly, my children. In America, this is truly the most inspiring city I have ever been in. There are cities that may be outwardly as impressive. There are no cities that have grabbed my heart and held on so tightly. I am staying in a condo that looks right down the Mall. Every evening I sit in awe, staring at the memorials, lit and serene. The Capitol Building could not look more stately. My heart is full.
On the 4th, we were eye to eye with the fireworks over the Mall. In short, it rocked. I now understand why thousands of people come to be a part of this party in the Nation's Capital. From dusk until after 11 pm, there were fireworks everywhere. My daughter and I oohed and ahed at all the blasts of color until our eyes were tired and our mouths were dry. As much the incredible beauty, we were struck by the magnificence of community and celebration. It hit me just how wonderfully connected we are, not through tragedy, through pride, love and hope.
Several years ago, a piece was sent out over the internet that showed the reality for this generation. It basically came down to the fact that my children, now 18 - 23, have grown up with the changes in consciousness brought about by AIDS. What it didn't show is that my children have grown up without the experience of a war in which the soldiers were alienated and blamed, the palpable effects of the depression our parents lived through, playing with children that have no electricity or running water in their homes (not by choice) or living in the unspoken fears of a cold war. My children are wonderfully privileged.
As a generation, we have worked hard to bring ease and comfort to our children. We want our children to have the best the world has to offer. We want them to not suffer and yet to have empathy, understanding and gratitude for the generations that have sacrificed. We have created a paradox. I have looked in the hearts of my children and realized that they don't know. At first, it frightened me - for them. Perhaps they shouldn't know. I do know that evolution is cyclical. History has shown that and that they will learn the lessons they need to learn. And yet, in my heart of hearts, I wonder if my children have the tools of mind and heart they will need to handle the future with insight and kindness.
Technology will continue to give them more than we ever hoped. But, are they getting enough time to dream, imagine and play with only what nature provides? They can interact with the entire world at the touch of a button and yet, are they getting enough human touch? As a society, we have been concerned about these things and more for some time. Being in this place that holds our past, present and future with ultimate power and presence, I cannot help but wonder what every parent wonders. Have we done it right? Have we given them what they need to go forward? Did we emphasize the right things? I can't say for certain. I do know that this is where my trust must come in; trust in the Universe, humanity, myself as a parent, our teachers, our history and, most of all, my children.
I know that the laughter and the stories we share, the guidance we give as adults, the examples we set, the love we give them, and the empowerment through encouragement and trust are all-important. I believe they can know without experiencing. They can be wise without sacrifice. They can be strong without anger. They can be compassionate without suffering. They can be just without fear. Perhaps, they can even be privileged without forgetting.
