Point in case: I am writing this piece sitting on a bed at a writers’ conference at a church retreat center in Georgia.

There are so many facts that in that sentence that I couldn’t have conceived of a year ago. I have never thought of myself as a writer; I only write because there is important information that deserves to be shared. Church retreat center – really? Me? And Georgia in the summer with heat and humidity---and let’s add forest fires? I wouldn’t expect anyone to believe that I’m actually in this place.

And yet, here I am. I have always thought of myself in one frame -- that tight rectangle that says “intuitive healer.” That frame has many panes of glass through which to see me: teacher; intuitive; minister; healer of people, buildings, land, animals and plants; clearer of souls and homes; crystal and flower essence healer; holder of space; leader of ceremonies; speaker; business and personal coach; and retreat leader. My great-granny would have said that I lay on hands. Oh yes, and I have a mystery school. All of these facets fit snugly inside my frame.

Today, I am finding that my expression of Spirituality is expanding rapidly into new and unlikely areas. I kayak and find joy being on the water; it’s like nothing I have ever experienced. I am writing SciFi and poetry and am getting shocking kudos for my work – shocking to me. I am cooking for fun; sewing because I want to. I am lifting weights, doing yoga and thinking seriously about taking dance. These are not things I would have ever considered important enough to take time away from my work.

Who we are in our heart of hearts will always be the same. How we manifest that incredible beauty and love evolves, if we allow it and embrace it. I had a very rigid view of who I was, what I was here to do and how that work was to be done. Highlight the word rigid. Now that I am becoming more fluid, I see how much we cling to our identities without giving them breathing room; room to grow and develop. It is as if once we have found one thing that works for us, we don’t consider anything else. But there is no one right answer to our existential question and there is no one limited expression of anyone’s personality.

We sell ourselves way too short when we only see ourselves through one frame, no matter how many panes we’ve assembled. Remember that we are being pushed by Spirit to give up everything that is not in alignment with our heart’s truth. When we hold onto one view of ourselves, we cause ourselves great pain – emotional, mental, physical and Spiritual. I have experienced it and I see it every day in almost every client.

Change. Grow. Dig deeper into your truth. Embrace the strength, beauty and love that is you. Wrap your arms around the love and opportunities that are being offered you by Spirit through every avenue possible. Don’t hide. Don’t fight any useless battles. With all the changes going on in Mother Earth, did you really think that you were going to escape change? No. It doesn’t work like that on this Earth. You are a part of all that is and in this wholeness change is essential.

Give up who you think you are and become who you know you are in your heart. A small piece of advice: Do it a little at a time. It is easier that way and helps you maintain your sanity.

Oh, one last thing – keep laughing.
