"Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated."

 ~Confucius

Why, oh why, does it take us so long to learn this? It is amazing to be this age (ageless!) and finally begin to have an understanding and appreciation for simplicity. I stood in the living room of my sweet little home the other day, looked around and realized that I could give it all away. The artwork, the amazing collection of crystals and stones, my beloved Jeep, the gifts that I treasure, my collection of music and my house; all of it could go and I would be happy. Hmmm -

I know that simplicity is more than stuff. It is a state of mind. It is a state of being. In this culture, simplicity starts with decluttering. That, by the way, is a huge industry with a certification program. I wish it could be done for teenagers and made to stick. Oh well, back to simplicity. How does one get to a state of simplicity? Of course, each of us walks his or her own path to simplicity in his or her own timing. For me, it was a matter of coming to an understanding of true responsibility, order of priority and how responsibility works. When I stopped taking emotional, mental, Spiritual and physical responsibility for others' lack of responsibility, I stepped into freedom.

This doesn't mean that I step out of my integrity or stop caring or stop being an advocate or lose my passion. It means that I understand and live in the truth of love, self-responsibility and (greater than trust) knowing. It means that every day I facilitate, honor and cherish in rightful balance. I am led by my heart, not my emotions or my head. It means that I work with the whole in a way that honors me. And, it means that I walk the walk, i.e.: teach by example.

Everyone has a role in the care of the planet and the healing of the humanity. Our society has taught us that others are more important than self. Most of us were raised to believe that we are our brother and sister's keepers. We are not. That sense of responsibility can make our lives feel overwhelmingly complicated and burdensome. Sometimes it is challenging to know how much to contribute. We are challenged to stay conscious and in balance. We are also challenged to not judge and yet, to stand for what is just.

At the end of the day, often with tea in hand, I sit quietly and review the events and the lessons of the day. It may be only 5 minutes or it may require longer contemplation. Sometimes insight comes in the stillness of the night when Earth and I are quiet and I can feel the simplicity that has been so elusive during the day. Choices become more easily understood. Freedom returns and life becomes balanced..

It has taken me a long time to come to know, in my heart of hearts, that I am as important as every other person. I have always known that my work was important and came to believe that it was more important than my own well-being; my health, love, family and my happiness. Many of us were raised with this mind-set. Our service is important and sacred. And, if we are not healthy in all aspects, we cannot offer our service in a sacred way. So simplicity comes down to this - loving self and taking care of self so that service is a natural overflow of our own well-being. In that practice, life and living become simple.

If this is difficult to figure out, ask yourself this question. What do you want to teach your children?

Kim
