Documenting our lives

I have saved every note, letter and picture from clients, friends and family since before graduation in 1987. I could not dispose of the love and the kinship that has been shared with me in this paper form. When I began this move, it was clear that I needed to let go of a lot of things and a lot of energy. As I blessed and released the beautiful, sometimes funny and often, poignant cards and letters, once again I received the heart felt love from the senders.

I wept with the review of my life, friends and family members lost, friends I have not thought of in years and pictures of all of us growing and changing. I was touched looking at birth pictures, remembering holding those infants minutes after they had entered this realm. I laughed heartily with the silly cards and silly photos. I wept again with memories of the moments captured in them. It moved me to Google my first boyfriend. We hadn't spoken since his family moved away in high school. I found out that he died a few years ago. I saw my life literally pass before my eyes. It was incredibly powerful. I was profoundly humbled.

I understood why I had been so uncharacteristically sentimental. I have moved a lot in this life. At one point, I was moving every 4 months. Friends joked that the boxes were my furniture! It is amazing, the number of people who pass through one's life in a week. I have always felt incredibly honored to have shared moments with so many. There is a handicapped man who bags at the grocery. I have come to look for him when I am there. He always smiles. We don't know each other's names and yet contribute to each other's lives several times a week. Will I remember these sacred moments without cards and photos?

All of you touch my life in so many ways every day. I learn through each interaction; more about you, me, this planet, and our universe. Those cards and photos were blessing, gifts of love and kindness. They were the threads of lives woven together in a magnificent tapestry. The strength of this tapestry is love. It was time to bless and return all that love and gratitude to each person so that it might shared in a new way, to weave more new tapestries, to spread more love.

Moving is a great way to clear out and clean up one's life. It can help us stay in present time. One of the themes of 2009 is "Let Go". I seem to be embracing this with zeal. And yet, I cry every Sunday morning watching CBS Sunday Morning. I cry at the power of love and am greatful that our lives are being documented. I watch someone interacting with a child and wonder if those moments of laughter and sharing will be remembered. Perhaps the remembering isn't as important as enjoying the moment. Perhaps that is the real documentation of our lives.

Thank you for all the moments we have shared. I look forward to more.
