Coming Home

This journey to find my next rightful, physical home has been the wildest adventure of my life. Over the last five years, I have made numerous trips to the East Coast, met wonderful people, explored tiny hamlets and huge cities, been awed by dynamic vistas, and touched by spectacular moments. Still, there remains no exact location, no place to land. With each trip, I know I'm getting closer and . . .

At the same time, we all know, from a Spiritual standpoint, that home is in the heart and life is in the moment. It is true that I am more settled in my heart than I have ever been. I live a more gentle and peaceful life than I ever thought possible. It is those "moments" that are disarming, often moving and, hopefully, humorous. Lately, my life has alternately felt like a wonderful adventure movie and a really bad B grade Sci-fi flick, something akin to The Tomato that Ate Tokyo (or whatever that was called).

Have you ever broken down your life and looked at the moments? We often record some of the more interesting moments through stories that we relate to friends and strangers. It is those stories that link us and create commonality. Other times, those moments are simply too weird to relate. We don't want people to think that we are crazy or telling tales and yet those experiences do occur and are a part of our lives, our truth and our reality.

What do these two things have to do with each other? Those moments in time, both bizarre and ordinary, are getting me to my rightful, physical home. It is in those seconds strung together that I clean up my karma, understand my unconscious motivations and find humor in the weirdness of life. These days, it is that humor, more slapstick than intellectual; that keeps me walking the path. Without the hilarity, albeit sometimes bordering on insanity, I would have given up this journey long ago.

I have heard it said, "If I weren't laughing, I'd be crying." I'd rather laugh. (Here's the magic.) When I find can recognize the ridiculous in the tough moments, I can laugh. When I laugh, I come back to my heart. When I'm in my heart, I am home. It doesn't matter where I am or what I am doing. It doesn't matter if I am alone or with a group of friends. It doesn't matter if I have lost my voice and sound like a bad Disney character. I know that I am loved and I am love because I am connected to the truth of my heart.

The heart is a very amazing home. It goes with us, even though we often try to journey away from it. That path can be scary or dangerous or lonely. Hopefully, those forays away from the heart serve to help us understand why it is much more sane and powerful to stay closer to our true homes. When we leave our hearts, we don't find love in another because we aren't expressing love. We are actually experiencing the absence of love, which, as we all know, has many "very uncomfortable" forms.

Every day, my practice is to be in my true home, which does, in fact, take me to my new physical home. In the meantime, I am present and experience the moments that make up the journey we call life. I wish you the same, whether they be bizarre or simple, heart pumping or quiet, singular or full - may you experience them as truly yours. May you always be at home in your Heart.
