Zen is Everyday Life

One Tuesday, at the beginning of December, it was 75 degrees in Denver, Colorado. A friend offered to take me on a motorcycle ride. I accepted. I hadn’t been on a bike in – let’s just say, way too long. It had been even longer since I had been on the back on somebody else’s bike. Read this “control issues” which is common with bikers. I was a little concerned, but this guy started riding about the time I had. He had kept it up for over 30 years so it was clear he was good enough and safe enough. Besides, I had already walked through the valley of death so many times that I had a permanent hall pass so why not.

He picked me up on this beautiful, big red bike he affectionately called Big Mo. On went the helmet and the gloves and off we went. I was still a little nervous. I was trying hard to find the groove; too hard. I took a breath and remembered and began to use the tools I have. I soon relaxed and fell into that comfortable, sweet Zen of riding with someone else. I want to give him credit for his part. He is an expert rider; very much at ease with having someone on the back of his bike and quite considerate of the other person’s comfort and needs.

I think we rode over 100 miles on freeways and mountain roads. I was impressed with both of us and greatful for the ride. I was most impressed that the Zen of riding came back. It is that feeling of being one with everything. On a bike, there is oneness with the other rider, oneness with the bike, oneness with the road and oneness with everything that is around you. Time becomes obsolete. There is no cell phone. The head chatter ceases. It is true that on a bike, the trees are greener. The air is fresher. There is thrill that never goes away. There is a gratitude that is ever present in your heart. It is Spiritual and it is Zen.

Let me give you another example. I was talking with a woman who, like many very intuitive people, feels outside her community. Lately, she has been feeling very tired and overwhelmed. As we were talking, she revealed that she loves math. She does math in her head to relieve emotional stress and gain peace. She, of course, not being a member of a math community, thought this was a little weird. Not so. Math is her Zen. Math is her connection to the Universe. When she does math, she feels the connection to the oneness of all. (The mechanics of all things are explained through math.)

We all have a place or a way that we connect with something greater than ourselves. It is important to find that and claim it, even if it matches nothing we know in our communities. It may be writing or doing crossword puzzles or building sand castles or singing. Whatever physical manifestation it takes on, it is the rightful, innate and powerful connections with our higher selves and all that is. And, hopefully, through time, with practice and consciousness, we will find more and more of these connections until we are in that state of Zen all the time. Until then, own what makes you happen and allow that to lift you and connect to the joy of being.

Happy Solstice,

Kim
