I have just returned from a few days of travel with a friend. It was a wonderful adventure. I thought, of course, that this was a trip to experience Colorado and New Mexico. The scenery was beautiful and majestic. Everyone we met was friendly and a delight to spend time with. However, upon my return to work, I discovered that the best part of the journey was the vacation from thought of any deep importance. I now understand why vacations should be mandatory - every month.
My brain is working! I had assumed that sluggish, "I need more coffee" mode was normal. My creativity is flowing again. I wasn't sure it would ever come back. My attitude is better. I wake up every morning happy. It wasn't a long vacation - just a little break. I want to tell everyone who is tired, depressed, overwhelmed and generally out of sorts to go away. I mean - away. Go somewhere out of the norm. Don't take your computer. Lock your cell phone in the glove box and save it for emergencies only. Don't listen to the radio. Let the silence overtake you.
You may feel lonely for a while because we are all used to so much noise and commotion. And then, as if through some magic, the loneliness will begin to be replaced by quiet. It is the kind of quiet that brings peace and comfort. It a gentle calm that allows organic communion with nature and Spirit. It is the kind of solitude that fills the heart and the soul. It is the silence that takes away time. It is that delicious quiet that brings you back to yourself.
As we got closer to home, projects began appearing in my brain. My telepathics (non-verbal communication) began humming in my head. I commented on events planned for the future. I was coming back on line. And yet, somehow it all seemed more manageable. It made me happy to think about all the projects waiting for attention on my desk. There were even more ideas coming into focus and without effort. I was looking forward to checking emails and returning phone calls. This is what I had been longing for - that joy of being that had been gone for way too long.
I have made the comment to others that we all make, "I need to do this more often." It is sooooo good for every part of us. We need a rest from our lives from time to time. We need to take a break from our reality so that we can see our lives and our loved ones with fresh eyes and a fresh attitude. We are in a very busy and chaotic season. I encourage you, as I have made a promise to myself, to take those much needed and deserved breaks. Get out of Dodge, even if it is for a few hours. Give your whole self a rest. Perhaps this will be the very best present you will gift yourself with this season.
Blessings to you on this journey of life,
