Allowing -- for what?

We have been raised in a society that makes allowances for many things, including other people's misconduct. We were expected to "turn the other cheek" at meanness or unethical behavior all the while, holding ourselves to a higher standard (very close to an unachievable perfection). As children, it was a bewildering, perhaps not consciously, yet clearly to our hearts and our souls. This double standard came not out of love or compassion or even understanding, but rather from a feeling that our singular input didn't count and we wouldn't or couldn't make a difference. It also was not polite to stand up for what was right except in war. In fact, standing up for yourself was considered egotistical and attention seeking. The perpetrated became the guilty. These unconscious statements and the lack of love and protection are mild compared to others witnessed during the last mid-century.

The belief was the standard in our culture. Still, it was confusing and has caused a lot of depression and disempowerment. Thank goodness, there was another result. It was the movements of the 60's and 70's. Personal power was beginning to be realized. We began to test the morays of society and discover our voice. We found a freedom for our selves and even for the families who had turned their heads in embarrassment and judgment of our self-indulgence. -- Fast forward to today. One more time, the passivity of us as individual Americans is in our face. We are again being offered the opportunity to choose victimization or empowerment.

No longer can a few take responsibility for the masses. It is never time to give up our hard won power, especially now. We cannot afford to allow for or shrug off meanness, lack of respect, need to control, arrogance, or entitlement. Each and every one of us has the right and the responsibility to speak the truth and stand for what is just. We also have an equal duty to model accountability for our children.

It is possible and necessary to be grounded, present and listen to what people are actually saying without judgment and still offer perspective and choice. I will admit that it isn't the easiest thing right now with all that is going on; politically, economically and energetically. However, in that it may be the most critical time in our lives to stand in and act from our truth.

We can start by voting. Voting is best done not from fear, but from the truth and the knowing in our hearts. It is a simple yet powerful way to act responsibly and thoughtfully. Voting is a foundational way we stop allowing for what is wrong and move our nation to what is right. I am not advocating a party. I am advocating a stance. The stance is justice, freedom, truth and the embodiment of democracy. It is not perfect and it is our voice. Who knows where it can lead when we take personal responsibility and participate. We can actively listen, ask questions and offer solutions. We create greater change when we feel empowered. Voting is an act of empowerment.

It is time for us to stand together and empower each other thoughtfully, respectfully and immediately. There is no tomorrow, only today. There is no one to wait for. There is no one else to rescue us. There is no one else to take responsibility. There is only you and only me.

Blessings,

Kim
